If you have suffered sexual, physical, or psychological abuse or injury due to someone else's criminal act, criminal injury compensation differs from personal injury claims. You may be eligible to claim compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). This is a government scheme, funded by the government, meaning the perpetrator does not need to be involved at all. CICA can compensate for your injuries (both physical and mental), loss of income (for specific periods we will explain), and out-of-pocket expenses.
Requirements:
- The criminal act must have been reported to the police at the time and not caused by your actions.
- Claims must be filed within two years of the incident (with exceptions we can explain in special circumstances).
How we help
- 1. We will submit your claim to CICA, who will decide whether to pay compensation and the amount of compensation after receiving the evidence.
- 2. If you disagree with CICA's Initial Decision, we may submit further evidence on your behalf.
- 3. If you are still not satisfied with CICA's decision, we will appeal to the CICA Tribunal.
